Are you one of those people who gets worked up by the grains of sand on the floor after they’ve come home from the beach? Well, in Casas da Areia, a project signed by the famous Portuguese architect Manuel Aires Mateus, you don’t have to worry about it. Do you know why? The very floor of these houses is made of sand. These four minimalistic suites are an oasis in Comporta for those who want to be the closest possible to nature.

Casas na Areia are located at three kilometers from the beach and 200 meters away from the Sado river. They are ideal for a group of up to eight people and they’re completely furbished with state of the art equipment. The houses (casas) are built in wood and the all of the sheets are linen. The design is modern and minimalistic.

All of the casas have a communal lounge area with access to the swimming pool, which adds to the community atmosphere. Adding to that, there are also four bikes at your disposal ready to be shared.

To create this fantastic tourism unit, old fishermen huts were transformed into minimalistic cabins. There, we can enjoy the “bare luxury” of the aesthetics and the modern amenities, always in communion with mother nature. New York Times considers this unit an irresistible destination for those with a bohemian soul.

In case you opt for a well-deserved rest in these lodges, we suggest getting rid of the high heels and the bags and enjoying summer in a pair of flip-flops.

For this project to come to life, the structure of the fishermen’s huts was restored and adapted to provide the highest possible level of comfort. Vernacular architecture materials were used, such as wood, reed, and straw. Oh, and sand, of course. A lot of it. In this 2009 project, the rustic goes hand in hand with the modern.
