Saudade at Museu Coleção Berardo

Saudade, China & Portugal was inaugurated on the 16th November at Museu Coleção Berardo, where it will remain until the 6 January 2019.

As the title suggests, the exhibition takes the Portuguese word that has long been regarded as untranslatable and goes well beyond it. The objective is to establish a dialogue that focuses on the concepts of diversity, celebration, and ambiguity.

Saudade, China & Portugal, a partnership between Museu Coleção Berardo and the Fosun Foundation, showcases artists from both countries, such as Sun Sun, Leng Guangmin, Rui Moreira, Joana Vasconcelos, and Luísa Jacinto.

Yuko Hasegawa, the exhibition’s curator and chief-curator of the Tokyo Museum of Contemporary Art selected 16 Portuguese and Chinese artists in whose works, she says, there are two distinguishing features. “The first is the intimate relationship with the saudade narrative” and the second is “the concept of entangling and intertwining, including diversity, festivity, ambiguity, which oftentimes work as a group”.

In Luísa Jacinto’s work, for example, saudade seems to be found in the void of her hazy gradients that limit spaces where there could be people, but there is no one. Her canvases are somewhere between a memory place and a non-place.

Guangchang Guo, chairman of Fosun International, hopes that “this small step may connect more resources and friends, forming a more influent, more important cooperation bridge” between the Chinese and the Portuguese governments.
