Terraços do Carmo, a panoramic balcony to Chiado

Dos Terraços do Carmo has fabulous views over Rossio and São Jorge Castle

The Carmo Terraces are located in Chiado, one of the most noble areas of Lisbon, and are a balcony to the city, making the connection between the convento do Carmo and Rua Garret. This work is part of the Chiado rehabilitation project designed by architect Alvaro Siza Vieira after the fire of 1988.

On the current place of Carmo Terraces, formerly were the old barracks of the GNR. After the Chiado fire, the recovery plan for this area of Lisbon did not anticipate the construction of this observation point. However, the hanging garden of Álvaro Siza Vieira appeared to already write a letter from politic Philip Folque, dated 1850.

The terraces were designed as public leisure spaces, providing fabulous views of the Rossio and St. George's Castle. They are located next to two historical monuments, the Elevador de Santa Justa and the ruins of the Convento do Carmo. They have Portuguese sidewalk flooring and small lawns, with a pleasant cafeteria with terrace.

This work was opened on June 10, 2015 by Fernando Medina, Mayor of Lisbon. Those who want to visit the viewpoint of the Elevador de Santa Justa can avoid the typical tourist queues from Rua de Santa Justa, when entering from the Carmo Terraces.
