Estação do Rossio, Lisbon's monumental railway station

Rossio Station instantly overwhelms by its main façade

The monumental Rossio Railway Station is located between Praça do Rossio and Praça dos Restauradores, integrated in the infrastructure to support the Sintra Line of the suburban train network of the Portuguese capital. Having Manueline style, it was designed by the architect José Luís Monteiro and built in 1886, commissioned by the Royal Company of the Portuguese Railways.

The construction work was awarded to a Belgian company and included, in addition to the station, the opening of the Rossio railway tunnel, the road link to the Calçada do Carmo and the Hotel Palace. Rossio Railway Station was built relatively quickly only after four years the station allowed locals to enjoy its inaguration. On November 23, 1890 it´s rail traffic opened to the public.

Estação do Rossio, Lisboa

Recently renovated, Rossio Station overwhelms anyone, who passes by its´ main facade, with eight doors, matching its nine windows and the clock located at the top center, being decorated in detail. The cover of the ferry pier is an excellent example of iron architecture, widely used in the nineteenth century.

This station, which has been operating for about 120 years, has long been Lisbon's main train station, because of its proximity to the historic center. Over the years, the Rossio Station has undergone several interventions and improvements ; in the last decade of the twentieth century a subterranean north atrium was built, with the purpose of creating a direct connection to the Lisbon´s Metro network.
