Ribeira das Naus

Take a pleasant walk along the Tagus River at Ribeira das Naus

Some consider the Ribeira das Naus to be the "beach" of the city center

Ribeira das Naus is the formal name of the frontier to the Tagus, which connects Praça do Comércio to Cais do Sodré. Many of the Portuguese navigators' ships were built along this riverside area. After the redevelopment was completed in 2013, it became a large garden, where you see people running, families are strolling around on the end-of-weeks or tourists are having a drink at the end of the day.

In all, it corresponds to about a thousand meters, renovated in 2013, comprising a pedestrian corridor along the river and two artificial lakes. The cars are circulating between them. In the center of the avenue there is a kiosk with a dozen tables, serving light meals and drinks.

Ribeira das Naus, Lisboa

Although diving is not allowed, some think of it as the "beach" of the city center. For a quick and pleasant connection from Praça do Comércio to Cais do Sodré railway station, Ribeira das Naus is greatly sought after by locals and tourists, who are seduced by the pleasant conditions of the sun, the river and the garden area.

Ribeira das Naus has now more than 400 years of history and its name is due to the founded yards of the shipbuilding, where plenty of boats were constructed, with which the Portuguese departed into the oceans for discoveries. The chosen location is due to the proximity of the new Ribeira palace, built in 1498, in the Terreiro do Paço. In the eighteenth century this area became occupied by the Royal Navy Arsenal, which remained until 1938.
