Jardim da Estrela

Romantic Garden of English inspiration - Jardim da Estrela

One of the central points of Jardim da Estrela is the beautiful green bandstand where musicians are performing during the summer

Jardim da Estrela, with original name is Jardim Guerra Junqueiro, was created in the middle of the 19th century, in front of the Basilica da Estrela, in the parish of Lapa, in Lisbon. The construction works began in 1842, but the garden was only opened in 1852. In the second half of the nineteenth century, the Passeo da Estrela was fashionable and had elements that now no longer exist, such as greenhouses, newsstands, a Chinese pavilion and a lion in a cage, known as - Leão da Estrela.

This romantic garden has small lakes with carp and ducks, a children's playground, a kiosk and a café with terrace for light meals. One of the central points of the garden is the green iron bandstand, where musicians play during the summer. It was built in 1884 and was originally located at the Passeio Público, before the construction of Avenida da Liberdade. The bandstand was transferred to Jardim da Estrela in 1936.

Jardim da Estrela was built in the style of romantically inspired English gardens. It occupies a total area of 4.6 hectares. There are five entrances to the garden, which contain a variety of flora and fauna, with rubber trees, tipuanas, dragoers and jacarandas. Around the lakes you will find ducks, swans and beautiful peacocks. In addition, this garden also has several beautiful sculptures, which are worth to observe.

On the first weekend of the month take place an urban handicraft fair "Crafts & Design", from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., and on weekends, one of the several stages hosts OutJazz festival. To the north of the garden there is English Cemetery, which contains the tomb of Henry Fielding, an English novelist and playwright who died in Lisbon at age 47.
