Lisbon Markets

The new life of Lisbon markets

The oldest markets of Lisbon turned into gastronomic markets and are now a meeting point for locals and tourists

Going to the market is not what it once was. If formerly, in the time of our grandparents, it meant picking the freshest products, fruit and fish, now it has a slightly different meaning. Not that the traditional markets have ceased to exist, but now the spotlight is turned to new markets that are offering great tasting moments.

Mercado da Ribeira – Time Out Market Lisboa

The Ribeira Market has been the main market in Lisbon since its inauguration in 1892. In 2004 it was managed by Time Out Lisboa magazine, and its retail business focus changed to catering. This iconic space, iron interior and an oriental-inspired dome, occupies 110,000 m2. Altogether it has 30 restaurants and 750 available places for sitting, inside and on the terrace.

Not only is it a tasting space, it still continues to exhibit food markets as well as the other markets. The purpose of the underwent Time Out renovation, turned it into a place of worship and a showcase of Portuguese cuisine for tourists. Here you can taste the creations of the chef Henrique Sá Pessoa, enjoy a steak - bife do lombo - in the Café de São Bento, taste the best Portuguese wines in Garrafeira Nacional and eat delicious chocolates in Arcadia.

At the kiosks, you can try the ham at Charcutaria Lisboa, the sushi of Praça Japonesa and enjoy the butcher's meat in O Talho. You can also buy the foods on the fresh market. There is also a wine outlet - garrafeira - where you can order wine and cocktails.

This market was inspired by the Ourique Field Market in Lisbon, which has been a hit in Lisbon. In all the 16 stalls, 13 of which are restaurants with a capacity for 500 people.
