Santa Justa Lift

Santa Justa Lift, the most famous monument of Baixa

The observation platform at the top of the Santa Justa Lift is one of the best places to observe the city

The Elevador de Santa Justa, also known as Elevador do Carmo, is one of the monuments that most appeals to tourists in Baixa Pombalina, the historical center of Lisbon. This elevator connects Baixa to Bairro Alto and has a neo-Gothic romantic design. The ticket office is located behind the tower, at the end of the staircase of Rua do Carmo. Passengers can choose to go up or down.

It opened in 1902, functioned on vapor at a time, and in 1907 began to work on the electric power, being the only vertical elevator in Lisbon to render public service. It is made of cast iron and enriched with filigree works, totaling a height of 45 meters with capacity to carry 29 people in each of the two cabins.

The elevator doors open every day between 07:00 and 23:00. The individual ticket costs € 2.8. We advise you to purchase a daily ticket "Viva Viagem" for € 6, which includes the Santa Justa Lift, as well as all the trams, buses and metro in Lisbon.

At the top of the platform you will find an observation deck and a café, which provide beautiful views of the center of Lisbon. This platform is a great place to observe the city in the night lights. The Santa Justa Elevator was designed by Raul Mesnier de Ponsard, student of the famous iron craftsman Gustave Eiffel, responsible for the construction of the Eiffel Tower.
