National Pantheon, where the great figures of Portugal lay

It took three centuries to get built, but today the National Pantheon is one of the most important monuments of Lisbon

The National Pantheon, or Santa Engrácia Church, took 300 years to be built. The expression "works of Santa Engrácia" was born here, referring to works that took too long to finish. In fact, this monument has a vast history of delays, reconstructions and restorations, having begun to be built in 1568 and finishing only in 1966.

This famous monument is located in the historical area of Santa Clara and is the posthumous residence of illustrious figures of the history of Portugal. It welcomes the tombs of Almeida Garret, Teófilo Braga, Guerra Junqueiro, Aquilino Ribeiro, Humberto Delgado, Nuno Álvares Pereira, Infante D. Henrique, Pedro Álvares Cabral and Afonso de Albuquerque, as well as the unavoidable Fado figure - Amália Rodrigues, and famous football player, Eusebio.

The National Pantheon deserves a visit for its historical importance, and also for the beautiful architecture. The whiteness of its exterior stands out in the landscape and its interior of colorful marbles and baroque decoration impresses anyone. Climb to the top to admire the beautiful view over the city.
