Elevador da Glória

Climb up to the Bairro Alto in a typical Elevador da Glória

Elevador da Glória is the busiest in Lisbon and the most accessible to tourists

Elevador da Glória is one of the few funicular railway lines left in Lisbon and is located in Praça dos Restauradores, in Baixa Pombalina. It was inaugurated in 1885 and was classified as a national monument in 2002. It links the Restauradores Square and the Bairro Alto in a journey of 265 meters up and down, transforming an upward travel into a romantic moment.

It was the second of its kind to appear in the city, after the elevator of the Lavra and before the elevators of Bica and Santa Justa. It was built by the Portuguese engineer, of French origin, Raoul Mesnier de Ponsard, who designed it to be moved by water balance. Only in 1915 it had moved to be being powered by electricity and today it still retains its original features.

When you get off the tram, on the right side you will see the observation of St. Peter of Alcantara, where you experience fantastic views of downtown Lisbon and the São Jorge Castle. Right across the street is the Oporto Wine Institute, where you can sample several Port wines. This elevator is the busiest in Lisbon and the most accessible to tourists, as it is right next to the main tourist information desk in the Palácio da Foz.
