The European Museum of the Year Award is the largest and oldest of the awards, given by the European Museums Forum

 

The Money Museum in Lisbon, the NewsMuseum in Sintra, and the Municipal Museum of Leiria are nominated for the European Museum of the Year Award in 2017, whose winner will be announced in May 2017. These three Portuguese museum spaces are part of a list of 46 museums nominated for the prize, which were chosen by an international jury including José Gameiro - director of the Museum of Portimão.

 

 

Among the three Portuguese museums, the Money Museum and the NewsMuseum are the most recent ones, all have opened in April 2016. The Money Museum is located in Baixa and is guarded by the Bank of Portugal, containing more than 1200 objects and interactive experiences, that tell the history of money. The News Museum, on the other hand, was opened on April 25th in the historical center of Sintra, presenting various interactive contents that tell the recent history of the Portuguese media.

 

 

The Municipal Museum of Leiria is the oldest of the three, and its origin dates back to 1917, it was reopened in 2015 with a content that integrates the collection of the old museum, the municipal artistic collections and an archaeological reserve. Among the other 46 European museums indicated, are: Ragnarock, the Danish museum dedicated to pop-rock culture, the Football Museum in Germany and the Museum of Emigration in Poland.

 

 

The winner of the European Museum of the Year Award will be announced in May in Zagreb, Croatia. This award is the main and oldest of awards granted by the European Forum of Museums. In 2016 the prize was awarded to Polin - History Museum of Polish Jews in Warsaw, Poland. In 2011 from the Portuguese museums, were distinguished: the Museu da Comunidade Concelhia da Batalha in 2013 and the Museu do Douro in Peso da Régua.
