Tourism continues to grow in the Azores
1.2 million overnight stays have been registered in the first nine months of 2016
Two years after the entry of low cost airlines, tourism indicators remain high in the Azores. According to data released by the Regional Service of the Azores Statistics, from January to September 2016, the archipelago's hotels recorded 1.2 million overnight stays, higher than 20.9% in the same period of 2015.
Of the 1.2 million overnight stays, 507,000 correspond to residents in Portugal, representing an increase of 19.2%. Residents abroad reached 761,000 overnight stays, which indicates an increase of 22.1%. Foreign countries that visit the Azores are: Germany, followed by the United States of America and Spain.
Total income of the Azores hotels reached 59 million euros by September, an increase of 30.5% compared to last year. The average income per room was 36.6 euros between January and September, which corresponds to a year-on-year positive change by 22.3%.
The low cost airline trips to Ponta Delgada on the island of São Miguel, took place in March 2015. The security, climate, nature, offered diversity, location and frequent air connections, gastronomy and hospitality, - are some of the features that attract more and more visitors to the Azores.
