The Cristo Rei, or the National Shrine Cristo Rei, is a religious monument dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, inspired by the Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro. Located in the municipality of Almada on the south bank of the Tagus, and was constructed in 1959 as gratitude the Portuguese episcopate in Lisbon that have escaped untouched from the 2nd World War.
The Cristo Rei is located 113 meters above the Tagus river, consisting of a pedestal of 75 meters and an image of Christ with open arms facing Lisbon of 28 meters. The pedestal, including the portico, measuring 82 meters high. This is the biggest tourist attraction of Almada.
On top of this monument, which is accessed by elevator, you get the best view of the entire city of Lisbon and on the 25th of April Bridge. The Cristo Rei appears in all the tourist guides, practically unavoidable in a visit to the capital of Portugal. To get there you need to cross Tagus river with the boat. Head to the Cais do Sodre and go till Cacilhas, whereby then catches a bus to get to the monument.
