Bridge Vasco da Gama

Vasco da Gama bridge is the longest bridge in Europe

The Vasco da Gama Bridge was inaugurated by the Expo 98 in Lisbon

The Vasco da Gama bridge extends over the Tagus estuary in the Greater Lisbon area, a total of 17 kilometers, almost disappearing into the horizon. In fact, this is the longest bridge in Europe and the fourth longest in the world, and one of the tallest constructions in Portugal.

This bridge connects Montijo and Alcochete municipalities to Lisbon and Sacavém and was built as an alternative to the 25 de Abril Bridge, that is often congested  at the rush hours. Its construction began in 1995 and ended three years later. The environmental impact was taken into account, as the bridge crosses the Tagus Estuary Nature Park, an important area of feeding and nesting waterfowl.

Some curiosities:Ponte Vasco da Gama

- It was built in order to withstand an earthquake four times more power than the 1755 earthquake that left Lisbon devastated.

- Its name commemorates the 500th anniversary of the arrival of Vasco da Gama to India, which took place in May 1498.

- In its inauguration was served feijoada which then registered in the Guinness World Records.
