Queluz Palace

Queluz Palace - a palace just like in Versailles

"The gallant intimacy, hidden, unobtrusive, and is one of Queluz charms."

José Augusto França

Between Lisbon and Sintra is situated the Queluz National Palace and its historic gardens, which are one of the best examples of harmonious connection between the palatial architecture and landscape in Portugal. The Queluz Palace was built in 1747 and is a large building colored in pink, rococo, inspired by Versailles.

Initially designed as a holiday home, it was the official residence of the royal family in the XVIII century, who left Queluz during the French invasion, taking much of the palace's contents. However, its interior has been preserved and renovated over the years and it gives a clear idea of how royalty lived to whoever visits the palace.

The gardens are also beautiful, with its baroque fountains and stone sculptures, will make you travel back in time. Today the palace is used for visits of heads of state and also to receive galas and concerts, due to the acoustics of the music room. It was classified as a National Monument in 1910.
