The Monument of Discoveries is located in Belém and was opened in 1960 during the dictatorship of Salazar and when the celebrations of the 500th anniversary of the death of Prince Henry - the Navigator. The facade of this monument is about 50 meters high, 20 meters wide and 46 meters long, resembling a caravel to enter the sea.
On this monument various figures of the Age of Discovery are represented, such as the Infante Dom Henrique, the central figure of nine meters high, Bartolomeu Dias, Diogo Cao, Ferdinand Magellan, Pedro Alvares Cabral, Vasco da Gama, among others. The statues were carved into the direction of the river Tagus , giving the feeling that they are watching it, invoking the will of the Portuguese to explore the world.
In front of the monument can appreciate the fabulous rose of the winds in marble but, more importantly, at the top of it opens up a unique view for your admiration, from where you can observe unforgettable sunsets. This is one of the best locations in Lisbon to take pictures and is certainly a must-see monument.
