The Jeronimos Monastery is the most visited monument in Portugal

The Jeronimos Monastery was commissioned by King D.Manuel I and built in the early sixteenth century and is one of the most important national buildings, classified by UNESCO World Heritage. It is located in one of the most qualified areas of Lisbon in Belém, near the Tagus River. In the year 2015 it was the most visited monument in Portugal, reaching nearly one million visits over this time.

The imposing monastery facade extends to three hundred meters, highlighting Southern Church portal, intricately decorated with the images of the Saint Patron of Portugal and Santa Maria de Belém. Its name is due to the Order of the monks of St. Jerome, which have established themselves there until 1834.

At the Jeronimos Monastery there are the tombs of several kings such as King Manuel I and King Henry, as well as the tombs of Vasco da Gama, Luís Vaz de Camões, Fernando Pessoa and Alexandre Herculano. An extension built in 1850 is the Archaeological Museum and in the west wing the Navy Museum.
