Ten tips to help you enjoy the city

We want your stay to be as enjoyable as possible, so we wrote a list of ten tips to help you make the most of Lisbon

1. Have you just landed in the Portuguese capital? Welcome! To avoid the queue of taxis that you find at the airport entrance in the arrivals hall, take the elevator to the area of departures and head to the city faster.

2. If you wish to take a tram to the Castle of São Jorge, avoid taking number 28. Instead, go to Figueira Square and take the 12. We guarantee that it gets there in no time and there will be fewer people as well as fewer chances of encountering pickpockets.

3. If you need to send something by post after 9 p.m, there are plenty of options. The CTT post office in Cabo Ruivo at Avenida Marechal Gomes da Costa is open until 11 p.m during the week. But the El Corte Inglés post office counter is open until 10 p.m and the CTT post at the Lisbon airport is open every day, including Sundays.

4. You want to enjoy the view from the top of the Santa Justa Elevator but do not feel like waiting in long queues? Head to the Largo do Carmo and then follow the Travessa Dom Pedro de Menezes, near the Carmo Church.

5. Miradouro do Arco da Rua Augusta is one of the best places to watch the sunset in the city. This iconic monument is open until nine o'clock - two hours longer than usual - in July and August.

6. Among the many free museums in Lisbon are the Jeronimos Monastery, the Belém Tower, the Tile Museum or the Pantheon, every first Sunday of the month.

7. At the National Theatre Dona Maria there is a 25% discount on every ticket on Thursdays.

8. If you do not want to pay for the Lisbon view, there are several solutions. Both the viewpoint of St. Peter of Alcantara and the viewpoint Graça are public and offer the best views over the city.

9. Visit the Portuguese capital in June because this is when the Santos Populares festivities take place.

In the most traditional neighbourhoods, the decorations are scattered on the streets and the smell of grilled sardines is in the air. To this the popular songs, dances and talks are added. Let yourself imbue the Lisbon spirit and enjoy the popular saints like a local.

10. There is a bike lane between Parque Eduardo VII and the Monsanto forest where you can not only ride your bike but walk or jog as well.

To ensure that you have a good time in Lisbon, you should start by choosing a hotel given its amenities, location, and price. You can also choose to meet a regional or historical hotel or even a boutique hotel. Pousadas de Portugal, for example, is a network of hotel facilities that occupy historic buildings, such as monasteries and palaces, and it certainly will provide you with a unique experience.
